Invisalign aligners are a set of custom-crafted plastic trays that are designed to gradually move your teeth into their ideal position. The aligners fit over your teeth, so they’re practically invisible to those around you. They are clear and look similar to mouth guards. You wear each set for two weeks and then switch to the next set in the series. Each set is slightly different, moving your teeth closer to their ideal alignment.
If you are planning to get Invisalign aligners, here is everything you need to know about the procedure.
Invisalign® aligner systems are ideal for our adult patients who wish to straighten their smiles discreetly. The aligners are smooth, comfortable, and removable, making them a perfect option for patients who do not have the time or patience to deal with traditional braces. Invisalign aligners are customized to each patient’s individual needs, so most patients are candidates for Invisalign. However, the only way to know for sure if Invisalign is right for you is to visit our office.
The average treatment time for Invisalign takes about a year. However, many patients are able to achieve their desired results in less time.
The amount of time it takes to complete the treatment will depend on factors such as:
Since Invisalign uses clear plastic aligners rather than brackets and wires, the treatment is much more comfortable.
Once your treatment is complete, you’ll need to wear a retainer to prevent your teeth from shifting out of alignment. The amount of time you’ll need to wear the retainer will vary based on your situation.
An aligner is measured for size and fit and then manufactured with the precise amount of force needed to shift your teeth into the ideal position. Your aligners are molded from smooth, BPA-free plastic that has been fabricated to fit your unique smile.
During your first consultation, we’ll use digital scans of your teeth to map out a complete treatment plan. Once your aligners are ready, you’ll return to our office for your first fitting. We’ll make sure your aligners fit properly and then show you how to insert and remove them.
Once your aligners have been properly fitted, you will begin wearing each set for about 14 days. During this time, your teeth will gently move into position.
After two weeks of wearing each set of aligners, you’ll switch to the next pair in the series. This process continues until your teeth have moved into the ideal position. Once your treatment is complete, we’ll fabricate a retainer to keep your teeth from shifting out of alignment.
Invisalign aligners should be worn for 20 to 22 hours each day, removing them only for meals or snacks. They must be worn for a minimum of 22 hours each day, or they may not be effective.
Invisalign aligners should be removed when consuming food or drink other than water. The aligners should also be removed when brushing and flossing your teeth and when undergoing cavity or gum disease treatments.
